White House tight-lipped on Trump’s 14th Amendment trial in Colorado

The White House declined to comment on Tuesday when pressed on the lawsuit seeking to keep former President Donald Trump off the 2024 election ballot in Colorado.

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington filed the lawsuit, which claims that Trump’s action on and leading up to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot disqualifies him from appearing on the ballot. The weeklong trial in the case opened Monday and could provide precedent for disqualifying Trump from winning the presidency.

“I don’t have anything to say about that,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told the Washington Examiner when asked about the lawsuit during Tuesday’s White House press briefing. “I’m not tracking that.”

The Hatch Act bars Jean-Pierre and other Biden administration officials from using their positions to discuss electoral politics, and she again demurred when pressed if barring Trump from Colorado’s ballot could embolden support for him in other states.

“Look, I’m just going to be really anything that is related to ballot elections, upcoming elections, especially as you’re asking me about 2024,” she continued. “I’m just not going to comment. I’m certainly not going to comment from this podium, from here.”
