A 16-year-old Long Island boy plunged 50 feet into a shaft on New York City’s Queensboro Bridge Monday evening after a social media stunt went terribly wrong.
The teen, a Lynbrook resident from Nassau County, was attempting to film content for TikTok when he lost his footing and tumbled into the bridge’s interior structure, the New York Post (NYP) reported, citing police and law enforcement sources. Emergency crews extracted the boy from the shaft and transported him to New York Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell, where he remained in critical but stable condition. Authorities have not released the boy’s identity.
The teenager descended a ladder into a narrow passageway within the bridge’s buttress before becoming trapped, according to the New York Daily News, citing officials. He spent roughly three hours stuck inside the confined space and was suffering from hypothermia by the time rescuers reached him. Officials stated the boy acknowledged his plan was to capture footage of the stunt for TikTok, the outlet reported. The extraction required a massive coordinated effort. Fire Department of New York (FDNY) Deputy Chief Nicholas Corrado said that 75 emergency personnel responded to the scene, 1010 WINS reported.

“This was a confined space operation, which is a very difficult, time-consuming, man-powered, intensive operation,” Corrado said. “It involves high-angle equipment, ropes. We have to monitor the air and create high points.”
Helicopters circled overhead while police boats patrolled the East River below during the hours-long rescue, according to the outlet. The New York Police Department (NYPD) plans to question the teen once he recovers.
Footage posted to Instagram profiles connected to the boy and his friends captured several youths scrambling from the scene moments after he tumbled into the shaft, AmNewYork reported. Video from the scene reportedly captured a voice exclaiming, “He dead fell,” with a sneaker visible in the frame.
Other content from the said profiles allegedly showed the teens venturing into underground transit passages and clinging to the outside of moving subway cars, the outlet reported.
The NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Public Information (DCPI) confirmed the teenager’s fall to the Daily Caller, noting that emergency services transported him to the hospital in stable condition.
