Hospital Ends Minor Sex Changes, Sends Parents Into Uproar

NYU Langone Hospital announced Tuesday they are ending all sex change surgeries and prescription services to minors.

The hospital previously provided children with sex-change surgeries, prescriptions for hormones and puberty blockers, the New York Times (NYT) reported.

The news comes after the Trump administration vowed to end sex-change surgeries for minors, pressuring medical institutions across the country to follow suit or face federal funding cuts. (RELATED: DUKE: Hospitals Cave After Trump Crackdown On Child Sex Changes)

Steve Ritea, a spokesman for NYU Langone, released a statement Tuesday.

“Given the recent departure of our medical director, coupled with the current regulatory environment, we made the difficult decision to discontinue our Transgender Youth Health Program,” Ritea said in a statement to NYU’s student newspaper, Washington Square News. “We are committed to helping patients in our care manage this change.”

Parents revealed the hospital had sent them a list of alternative endocrinologists and physicians following their outrage, according to a report from the NYT. (RELATED: Doctors Pressured Son To Commit Suicide, Family Alleges In Mission To Stop Euthanasia Project)

Angry New York residents protested the hospital in early February, seeking a reversal of the policy change by NYU Langone, AMNY reported. Sex and the City actress Cynthia Nixon was present. She expressed outrage after revealing her “transgender son” received a sex-change surgery at NYU Langone, the outlet reported.

“The idea that this city is filled with young people who thought they had a place to go where they could receive the highest care, and that place has now been shut to them, sickens me — sickens me to my core,” she told the crowd of protestors.

One NYU Langone Health trained plastic surgeon spoke up in support of the program’s closure on Fox & Friends.

“You’re at the number one plastic surgery program, you’re just grateful to be there. There’s no room to speak up. You’re a soldier,” Dr. Ira Savetsky stated.

“As a father to three young children and as a physician who took an oath to do no harm, I failed to speak up, and I just want to thank President Trump for having more clarity on this,” he said.

The Daily Caller reached out to NYU Langone Health for comment, but did not receive a response prior to publication.
