New York City residents hoping to earn extra cash clearing snow from public spaces must first produce three forms of identification.
The requirement has drawn sharp criticism given the city’s relaxed approach to voter ID. The Department of Sanitation of New York is recruiting temporary workers ahead of a major blizzard expected to dump nearly two feet of snow on the five boroughs, according to the agency’s official website. Registration demands three categories of documentation: two small photos sized 1.5 inches square, a pair of original IDs along with photocopies, and a Social Security card.
The paid positions offer $19.14 per hour, jumping to $28.71 after 40 hours in a week. Workers must be at least 18, legally authorized to work in the United States, and capable of heavy physical labor. The documentation requirements stand in stark contrast to what New York City demands from voters, Fox News reported. The city’s Board of Elections does not require most registered voters to present any identification at the polls.

Individuals voting for the first time may submit a driver’s license number, a non-driver ID number, or the final four digits of their Social Security number. Those who skipped providing ID during registration can still cast an affidavit ballot.
Conservative commentators seized on the disparity. Former Michigan gubernatorial candidate Tudor Dixon called it a “Hypocrisy Alert” on X, noting that Mayor Zohran Mamdani “demands you show 2 forms of ID plus copies and a social security card” simply to help clear sidewalks.
Fox News host Jimmy Failla also mocked the policy on social media. “Zohran Mamdani requiring TWO forms of ID to be a voluntary shoveler for the blizzard. This is Jim SNOW 2.0,” he wrote.
Mamdani belongs to the Democratic Socialists of America, an organization that has long opposed voter ID laws and labeled such requirements discriminatory barriers to the ballot box.
