The mother of a Maine teenager is taking her child’s school to court, alleging the school worked to transition her child, a biological girl who identifies as a boy, without her knowledge.
Due to appear in federal court Wednesday, the mother, identified as a Newcastle native, is suing the Great Salt Bay Community School in Damariscotta because they allegedly helped her 13-year-old child identify as another gender behind her back, according to a report.

Staff at the school facilitated the change in gender by using specific pronouns in addressing the teenager, and they gave the child a chest binder, according to the mother’s allegations.
The mother became aware of the situation when she discovered her child’s chest binder in the bedroom, the report noted.
School staff deliberately kept the nature of its actions from the mother, according to the lawsuit.

In doing so, the school purportedly violated the mother’s constitutional rights, she claims.
The lawsuit was filed on behalf of the mother by the Goldwater Institute, and it names the Great Salt Bay Community School Board, two school social workers, the principal, and the district superintendent as defendants.
