President Trump Put Senate on Notice, Announces He WILL NOT Sign Any Other Bills Until SAVE Act Passes and Demands These Two Changes to the Legislation
President Trump has issued his ultimate ‘trump card’ to pressure the Senate into finally passing the SAVE Act to secure America’s elections once and for all. And he wants them to do a bit of additional work on the legislation as well.
The SAVE Act is an absolutely critical measure that requires every American to show ID to cast a ballot.
It also requires proof of citizenship BEFORE registering to vote.
Democrats are in meltdown mode because, should the measure pass, they will find stealing elections far more challenging.
But Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D) acknowledged that Republicans currently lack the internal cohesion necessary to execute a procedural maneuver called a ‘talking filibuster’ to muscle the SAVE Act through the Senate.
As a result, the bill remains stuck.
As TGP readers know, it takes 60 votes in the Senate to close debate and break a filibuster. Utilizing a talking filibuster in theory would make things more painful on the opposition and cause them, to eventually give up and allow a bill to pass with a simple majority.
On Sunday, Trump made clear he was fed up and issued an ultimatum on Truth Social: no more bills until the SAVE Act is on his desk.
And that’s not all: Trump also said he wanted two additional changes: no mail-in ballots except in necessary circumstances (which the SAVE Act does not limit mail-in voting) and a total ban on transgender mutilation for kids.
“Great Job by hard-working Scott Pressler on Fox & Friends talking about using the Filibuster, or Talking Filibuster, in order to pass THE SAVE AMERICA ACT, an 88% issue with ALL VOTERS,” Trump wrote. It must be done immediately. It supersedes everything else. MUST GO TO THE FRONT OF THE LINE.”
“I, as President, will not sign other Bills until this is passed, AND NOT THE WATERED DOWN VERSION – GO FOR THE GOLD: MUST SHOW VOTER I.D. & PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP: NO MAIL-IN BALLOTS EXCEPT FOR MILITARY – ILLNESS, DISABILITY, TRAVEL: NO MEN IN WOMEN’S SPORTS: NO TRANSGENDER MUTILIZATION FOR CHILDREN! DO NOT FAIL!!!” He added.
Should Trump get his way, that means the DHS will remain shut down until the SAVE Act becomes law, and Thune’s beloved ‘bipartisan’ housing bill will have to wait.
In addition, the House of Representatives would also have to pass the Save Act a third time, with these new demands on mail ballots and trans provisions.
This could create some challenges, particularly amongst more moderate GOPers in blue states.
Upon reading Trump’s post, disgraced Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer fumed, vowing total gridlock to stop the Save Act while calling it “Jim Crow 2.0.”
The SAVE Act is Jim Crow 2.0. It would disenfranchise tens of millions of people.
If Trump is saying he won’t sign any bills until the SAVE Act is passed, then so be it: there will be total gridlock in the Senate.
