DoorDash customers find no tip leads to later delivery

DoorDash is now warning customers that not adding a tip could mean their food delivery order will be delayed.

“Orders with no tip might take longer to get delivered — are you sure you want to continue?” the food delivery service tells customers in a pop-up warning on the app.

If customers make their suggested tip $0, the automatic pop-up warning occurs in the app. The app then gives the customer options to add a tip or continue without.

The delivery drivers can choose which order they accept to deliver, with tips essential for the base pay of their work.

The pandemic led to a boom in the delivery service business. Delivery drivers can manage multiple orders at the same time, and those with tips are likely to be prioritized.

Food delivery drivers have also been victims of the rise of violent crime, including shootings and carjackings.

In September, a Maryland food delivery driver died after trying to stop a thief from stealing his car.

In 2021, 66-year-old Mohammad Anwar was working as a food delivery driver near Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., when a 13-year-old girl and a 15-year-old girl carjacked him while shocking him with a stun gun and crashing into a sidewalk, where he was thrown from the car, killing him on impact.

When Los Angeles attempted to experiment with food delivery robots, they discovered the robots also became targets of crime, with incidents of theft and physical attacks.
