Rep. Nick LaLota anticipates third attempt to expel George Santos after ethics report

Rep. Nick LaLota (R-NY) predicted another expulsion attempt would come against his fellow Rep. George Santos (R-NY).
Santos avoided his second vote for expulsion Wednesday by a 213-179 margin. On Thursday, LaLota told C-SPAN that those who voted against ousting Santos from the House could change their minds soon. A C-SPAN reporter asked LaLota if he himself would bring another expulsion resolution to the floor, which he replied that he would.

“I think that’ll be — it’s likely to be right after the Ethics Committee publishes their findings, which we’ve been told it’s going to be honored before November 17th,” LaLota said. “You know, a lot of my colleagues I had private conversations with, they wanted to hang their hat on something. They wanted to hang their hat on a guilty plea, a guilty finding of a — of a jury or a judge or an ethics committee finding. So I would expect the number of Republicans to increase from 24, like it was yesterday, and I expect the number of Democrat-knows to decrease from 31 that yesterday.”
LaLota did not seem surprised that Democratic House members seemingly bailed Santos out by voting against his expulsion.
“I would suspect they love the politics of this,” LaLota said of his Democratic counterparts. “They love not talking about the border. They love not talking about the budget. They love talking about George Santos. Their political priorities are probably misaligned there.”

LaLota was among Reps. Anthony D’Esposito (R-NY), Mike Lawler (R-NY), Brandon Williams (R-NY), and Marc Molinaro (R-NY), who signed a “Dear Colleague” letter sent to lawmakers ahead of the Wednesday vote urging Republicans to vote to oust Santos.
Santos is still in his first term in Congress. He faces some 23 counts charged via two federal indictments, in addition to other criminal and ethical indictments.
