Oklahoma is one of various states offering a child tax credit to eligible taxpayers in 2024, even as an expanded federal version of the child tax credit lapsed in 2022.

The Sooner State has offered a child tax credit to eligible taxpayers since 2013 and will continue to offer the $100-per-child credit for qualifying families into next year.

Oklahoma offers this tax credit to families with children under the age of 17 who make a federally adjusted gross income of $100,000 or less per year.

The child tax credit in Oklahoma is not refundable and is equal to 5% of the federal child tax credit. Because the federal child tax credit is currently worth $2,000, the amount of the state credit is a maximum of $100 per child but may not exceed the filer’s income tax liability. A tax liability is the amount an individual must pay in taxes to the government.

Oklahoma’s child tax credit is similar to a federal child tax credit, which in 2021 was increased to $3,600 per child younger than 6 or up to $3,000 per child ages 6 through 17 for eligible families. The increased federal child tax credit expired in 2022, and since then, several states, including Maine, Maryland, and California, have expanded their child tax credit offerings.

More information on tax credits provided to taxpayers in Oklahoma can be found on the state’s website.
