Democrats count on flawed GOP candidates to make up for brutal Senate map in 2024

The committee dedicated to electing more Democrats to the Senate is projecting confidence in maintaining vulnerable chamber seats up in 2024 by relying on “flawed Republicans.”

In a memo released Friday, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is depending on Republicans with political baggage to help Democratic candidates sail through the election. The GOP holds only 11 of the 34 seats that are up for election next year, while Democrats are defending 20 — placing pressure on the party to hold or expand their slim majority in the chamber.

“Three factors are contributing to Senate Democrats’ strong position to defend our majority: the strength of our candidates and campaigns, flawed Republicans fighting in vicious primaries, and the continued resonance of issues like women’s right to make our own health care decisions,” the memo states.

Multiple Democrats running for Senate have outraised their Republican opponents in vulnerable states. Rep. Colin Allred (D-TX) raised around $4.7 million during the third quarter of this year in his efforts to defeat Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), who pulled in $3.1 million. In Florida, former Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (D-FL) narrowly outraised Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL), bringing in $1.7 million and $1.6 million, respectively. Scott, however, outweighs Mucarsel-Powell with more cash on hand.

While fundraising plays a crucial role in elections, the DSCC is relying on the unreliability of candidates like Kari Lake, the 2022 gubernatorial candidate, who launched her Republican bid against incumbent Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) after the third quarter ended. Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) is the liberal Democrat challenging Sinema for the seat.

Lake, a staunch supporter of former President Donald Trump and an election denier, has been engrossed in a number of legal battles as she attempted to challenge last year’s election results — none of which succeeded in court.

“These candidates have lost before, are on tape espousing their dangerous views, and bring damaging vulnerabilities to their campaigns,” the memo states.

“Strong Democrats, damaged Republicans, and a favorable campaign issue set will all contribute to Senate Democrats’ victories in 2024,” the memo states. “One year out from Election Day, these factors are boosting our campaigns across the map and setting the stage for Democrats to successfully defend our Senate majority.”
