Youngkin says election stakes are high: ‘Can’t afford’ more Biden ‘weakness’

Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) said the nation “can’t afford” more of President Joe Biden‘s “weakness.”

Youngkin was asked during an interview on ABC’s This Week if he thought the 2020 presidential election was stolen, a common claim that former President Donald Trump has repeated since leaving the White House. The Virginia governor stated that while he believes Biden did legitimately win the last presidential election, he wished that the outcome would have been different, citing Biden’s “projected weakness” at home and abroad.

“In all candor, the chaos we see around the world is his projected weakness,” Youngkin said Sunday. “International foreign policy has resulted in multiple spots of chaos from Israel to Ukraine to China. His foreign policy weakness, again, has resulted in bad adversaries being funded, like Iran. And then we see his weakness at our border, which has turned every state into a border state. The free flow of illegal drugs and crime has really invaded everywhere.”

Youngkin reiterated that he wished Biden was not the president and stated that the United States “can’t afford” to keep him as president come 2024. The governor has been considered by many to be a contender for the 2024 Republican primary race, though Youngkin has repeatedly insisted that his focus is on the state of Virginia — not the 2024 White House race.

The state of Virginia will hold multiple elections this Tuesday, with state Republicans aiming to keep control of the House of Delegates and flip the state Senate.

The topic of abortion has been a major focal point this election cycle. Youngkin was asked if the subject would “cost” him and his party going into Tuesday. The governor acknowledged that abortion is a “divisive” topic but believed that a 15-week abortion ban would be a “reasonable” middle ground for state voters.

“I really feel that this is a moment for us to come together around reasonable limits,” Youngkin said.

Biden recently sent a fundraising email through the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee to assist Virginia Democrats ahead of Tuesday’s election, though it is not yet known if the president will visit the state in person. Ken Nunnenkamp, the executive director of Virginia’s Republican Party, stated that Biden visiting Virginia would only remind state voters of “the choice” they will have in the 2024 presidential election, as less than half of state residents approve of Biden.

Trump is still leading the Republican Party’s 2024 primary race, despite facing numerous indictments that started earlier this year related to storing classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago residence and attempting to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia. Should Trump become the 2024 Republican nominee for president, it would set the stage for a rematch between him and Biden in 2024.
