Bystanders reportedly tackled and pinned down a fleeing suspect Monday in California after a fiery crash killed a woman and reduced her Toyota Prius to a burning wreck.
The collision happened around 7:15 p.m. on the eastbound 10 Freeway near Robertson Boulevard in the Palms neighborhood, leaving one person dead at the scene and another in critical condition, CBS Los Angeles reported, citing a California Highway Patrol (CHP) incident log. The incident left one person dead at the scene and another in critically injured and hospitalized, according to a Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) press release.
“A third patient, reportedly detained on scene by bystanders, has been transported in unknown condition,” said the LAFD.
Construction worker Jacob Deegan told KTLA he was driving directly behind the crash when he watched the suspect veer across four traffic lanes and strike the Prius from behind. The impact sent the Prius and two more vehicles slamming into the center divider, where the hybrid caught fire, according to Deegan. KTLA identified the deceased as a woman. Witness Eve Porinchak described the blaze in an interview with KTLA. “I’ve never seen a fire that giant that up close before,” she said. “There was a lot of black smoke and a lot of minor explosions. It was very, very hot. It lit up very quickly.”
Deegan said he moved to help and was joined by others. He told the outlet he battered the window with a golf club before pulling back as the flames grew. KTLA obtained footage of the incident.
Deegan alleged that he then saw the driver at fault bolting down the freeway. “I did tackle him and I got him on the ground and I just asked him, ‘Hey, man, sit right here,’” he said. “‘He kept trying to run off’.” Other drivers helped restrain the suspect until CHP officers arrested him at the scene.

LAFD spokeswoman Lyndsey Lantz told the Westside Current that firefighters employed hydraulic rescue tools at the scene. At the scene, a silver Infiniti sat across the two leftmost lanes alongside the burning Prius. CHP issued a Sig-Alert that shut down eastbound traffic for hours. The agency announced that all lanes were back open at 1:40 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Westside Current. Authorities have not said whether alcohol or drugs played a role, KTLA reported.
