Tlaib hits back at people trying to ‘silence’ her

Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) hit back at people trying to “silence” her as she faces multiple censures in Congress for her comments on the war in Gaza.

Tlaib has found herself the target of intense bipartisan criticism over the past month over her response to the war in Gaza, which reached a fever pitch when she refused to backtrack statements about a blast at a Gaza hospital that was prematurely blamed on the Israeli air force. In a statement on Tuesday, Tlaib bashed her colleagues for “distorting” her position on the conflict and accused them of not valuing the lives of Palestinians.

“It’s a shame my colleagues are more focused on silencing me than they are on saving lives, as the death toll in Gaza surpasses 10,000,” she said. “Many of them have shown me that Palestinian lives simply do not matter to them, but I still do not police their rhetoric or actions. Rather than acknowledge the voice and perspective of the only Palestinian American in Congress, my colleagues have resorted to distorting my positions in resolutions filled with obvious lies.”

Tlaib said that she has “repeatedly denounced the horrific targeting and killing of civilians” by Hamas as well as the Israeli government, drawing an equivalence between the two, and has mourned the losses on both sides.

“Meanwhile, each day that passes without a ceasefire brings more death and destruction upon innocent civilians, who have nowhere safe to go, drawing outrage and condemnation from the American people and the international community,” she continued. “A majority of Americans support a ceasefire, but this Congress isn’t listening to their voices.”

The Michigan Democrat concluded by saying she would continue to push for a ceasefire and a “lasting peace that upholds the human rights and dignity of all people.”

Her statement was met with support from fellow House “Squad” member Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY).

“[Tlaib] is a strong lawmaker, a leading progressive voice for her constituents, and a friend,” he wrote in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. “We cannot allow the Republicans to punish the only Palestinian-American in Congress because she stood up for peace, love, and humanity.”
