The Toledo Police Department said Saturday evening “many victims have been transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment” after officers responded to a report of a person shot near a community street festival.
The department is currently searching for the suspect or suspects involved, and asked the public to “expect a significant police presence as officers continue their search and investigators work to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.”
City council member Theresa Morris said there were at least eight victims, though the severity of their injuries remains unclear. The shooting occurred at approximately 5:37 p.m., according to the department’s statement.
“This tragedy is really weighing heavily on both the residents and those who visit and enjoy this festival year after year,” Morris said. The festival may not reopen on Sunday.
Gov. Mike DeWine (R-OH) said on social media that he is deeply concerned about the situation, and that “summer festivals should be safe spaces for families to spend time together without fear of violence.”
“Fran and I are praying for everyone impacted by the incident at the Old West End Festival, and we are confident that law enforcement will locate the suspects involved in this senseless crime,” he said.
