Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Superintendent Alberto Carvalho resigned effective June 21, months after the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) raided both his home and office.

In mid-February, FBI agents raided Carvalho’s home and office, as well as a third location in Miami. The FBI has not said what it is investigating regarding Carvalho or whether anything was seized during the raids. (RELATED: Federal Agents Raid Los Angeles Superintendent’s Home, Office)

Following the investigation, the LAUSD Board of Education unanimously voted to place Carvalho on paid administrative leave, NBC News reported.

“The Board remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring stability, continuity, and continued progress through strong leadership. Our focus remains unchanged: providing every student with a high-quality education, supporting our dedicated workforce, and maintaining the trust of the communities we serve,” LAUSD said in a statement provided to NBC.

Federal prosecutors have an open case against Joanna Smith-Griffin, founder of AllHere, a now-defunct tech company that LAUSD contracted to build a chatbot called “Ed” for students in the district. Federal prosecutors have charged Smith-Griffin with securities fraud, wire fraud, and identity theft.

By the time AllHere collapsed, LAUSD had paid more than $3 million in advance, according to NBC News. Carvalho had publicly supported “Ed” on numerous occasions.

Carvalho released a statement in March, following the initial FBI raid, maintaining his innocence: “Mr. Carvalho remains confident that the evidence will ultimately demonstrate that he acted appropriately and in the best interests of students.”

Carvalho’s name is not mentioned in the Smith-Griffin case, and he has not been charged with any crimes.

LAUSD said in a statement that Acting Superintendent Andrés Chait will continue in his role. Carvalho had been Superintendent since 2022.
