The Senate Rules Committee is holding a hearing where it will consider a resolution from Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI) to change procedure temporarily to allow consideration of 350 nonpolitical military promotions at one time.

The hearing on the resolution is expected to begin at 3 p.m. EST from Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. The resolution is the latest attempt to bypass Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s (R-AL) blockage on military promotions over the Department of Defense’s abortion policy.

The proposed resolution would need 60 votes on the Senate floor, meaning nine Republicans would need to join all Republicans in approving the measure. Tensions within the GOP over the blockage reached a fever pitch earlier this month when several Senate Republicans spoke out against Tuberville’s blanket hold on the floor of the chamber.

Tuberville began his hold on military promotions earlier this year, in protest of the Defense Department’s policy of paying for travel expenses for servicemembers to go out-of-state to obtain an abortion.
