New Hampshire announces primary for Jan. 23, defying DNC schedule

New Hampshire Secretary of State David Scanlan announced on Wednesday the Granite State’s primary will take place on Jan. 23, 2024, defying the Democratic National Committee‘s presidential nominating schedule.

The first-in-the-nation primary comes eight days after the Jan. 15 Iowa caucuses for Republicans, flouting the DNC and President Joe Biden’s decision to reshuffle the nominating schedule to give preference to South Carolina’s Feb. 3 primary in the aftermath of the 2020 election.

New Hampshire will keep its first-place primary status in the schedule but will also face punishment from the DNC, including the loss of delegates at the Democratic convention due to noncompliance with the committee’s rules. Biden will also not appear on the presidential primary ballot due to his compliance with DNC rules, although voters can still write in Biden during the primary. New Hampshire state law requires the Granite State to hold its primary before any other state’s primary.

Biden faces a primary challenge from Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN), a long-shot candidate who faces an uphill climb to unseat the president to become the Democrats’ next standard-bearer.

Iowa Democrats have also ceded their first-place caucus status and will release the results of their mail-in system on Super Tuesday, March 5, 2024. They still intend to hold an in-person caucus on Jan. 15 but only for “party business.” Democrats will hold South Carolina’s primary on Feb. 3, then Nevada’s primary on Feb. 6, followed by Georgia on Feb. 13 and Michigan on Feb. 27.

Republicans, meanwhile, will hold their Iowa caucuses on Jan. 15, then New Hampshire on Jan. 23, then the Nevada caucuses on Feb. 8, and South Carolina’s primary on Feb. 24.
