Rep. Adam Smith‘s (D-WA) home in Washington state was vandalized by protesters calling for a ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas.

Smith said in a press release on Friday that the vandalism of his residence in Bellevue is “sadly reflective” of the political discourse in the United States and is “completely unwarranted, unnecessary, and harmful to our political system.”

“Throughout the course of my career, my staff and I have continually met with groups from all parts of the political spectrum, including Pro-Palestinian and left-wing activists, and I remain open to meeting with these groups and discussing our differences and where we can come together in a productive and peaceful way,” Smith said in a statement. “We must engage with politics in this way and reject the rise in political violence that we have witnessed over the past several years.”

Smith added that extremism on “both the left and right side” is a “threat” to democracy and “has been condoned for far too long.”

“The world is increasingly complicated and full of tough challenges that require strong leaders. I am committed to taking on these challenges and this act of vandalism has only made me more determined to remain in politics to ensure that we resolve our differences in a peaceful way that truly reflects representative democracy,” the Washington Democrat said.

The incident at Smith’s home is the latest in a string of incidents involving pro-Palestinian activists who have vandalized both Democratic and Republican district offices and other buildings in cities and on campuses in protest of the war in Gaza.

In early November, Rep. Monica De La Cruz (R-TX) claimed “pro-Hamas activists” vandalized her district office in Texas. De La Cruz said the vandals “will not intimidate me,” and her “support for Israel and the Jewish community is, always has been, and always will be unwavering.” Activists wrote, “Israel kills Jews too” on the office windows, and there appeared to be sheets with red markings stating, “Monica Murders” and “Israel is doing genocide and you support it.”

Rep. Dan Goldman’s (D-NY) office in New York was vandalized on the exterior with phrases like “Blood on ur hands,” “Free Palestine,” and “Let Gaza live.” One of two lawmakers who were in Israel during the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks, Goldman said that attacking the staff of a Jewish elected official “at a time of rising violence and rampant antisemitism is dangerous and unacceptable.”

A pro-Palestinian protest at the beginning of November led to graffiti found on several monuments surrounding the White House. Video showed a Palestinian flag raised on the statue of the Marquis de Lafayette near the White House, and “Free Palestine” was spray painted on its pedestal. A Palestinian keffiyeh was put on the head of one of the figures at the foot of the pedestal.

During a protest in New York City on Thanksgiving, the New York Public Library was also vandalized. One of the lines painted in red that accompanied red hand prints stated, “You fund genocide.”
