Two people were hurt at a building in midtown Atlanta on Friday afternoon after a protester set themselves on fire outside the building.

The protester arrived around 12:17 p.m. and was carrying a Palestinian flag. The protester suffered severe burns and was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition, police announced at a press conference, according to Fox 5 Atlanta.

A guard attempted to intervene but was unsuccessful, receiving burns to the leg and wrist. The guard’s exact condition was not announced. Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and FBI responded to the scene, as did Atlanta fire and police departments.

Emergency officials said the Palestinian flag was found at the scene and that gasoline was used as an accelerant by the protester to set themselves on fire.

Atlanta Police Department Chief Darin Schierbaum said Friday that the incident was not a terrorist act but did describe the incident as an “extreme act of political protest.”

The Israeli Consulate and several businesses are located at 1100 Spring St. NW. The Consulate General of Israel Atlanta told Atlanta News First that everyone in their office is OK and that they are still investigating.

“The community is safe. This department is aware of the tensions that are present right now in the Jewish community and in the Muslim community,” Schierbaum said. “We continue to ensure that everyone is protected in Atlanta, Georgia, regardless of your religion, regardless of your heritage, regardless of your nationality.”
