Billionaire and gamer Elon Musk said Monday evening that he could not play the video game Grand Theft Auto V because the game requires players to shoot police officers.
Musk was responding to a user on social media who joked that he had not played many of the entries in the Grand Theft Auto series, one of the most popular video game franchises in the world. Musk, who also owns Tesla and SpaceX, said he tried to get into the series himself but could not gain interest since he “didn’t like doing crime.”

“Tried, but didn’t like doing crime,” Musk posted on X, formerly Twitter. “GTA5 required shooting police officers in the opening scene. Just couldn’t do it.”

Musk has made his love for video games no secret, and his recently released biography, written by Walter Isaacson, revealed that he chose to play video games until 5:30 a.m. on the night he decided to buy Twitter in 2022. He has also said that killing demons in a video game “calms the demons in my mind,” according to Fortune.

Isaacson’s book also detailed that Musk created his own video game when he was a child and considered video game development as a career for himself. However, he opted not to pursue game development because he “wanted to have more impact.”
Musk’s comment on GTA V comes as the game has sold over 190 million copies since its release in 2013, according to Sports Illustrated. The trailer for the game’s sequel, Grand Theft Auto VI, was released on Monday and has over 78 million views as of Tuesday afternoon.
