Sununu writes off Trump over legal distractions as he narrows down endorsement

Gov. Chris Sununu (R-NH) still has not settled on his endorsement for the Republican nomination for president but said it will not be former President Donald Trump.

Sununu told Fox News on Monday night that his endorsement will go to “one of the three governors,” but he has not decided which one. The three governors refers to Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) and former Govs. Nikki Haley and Chris Christie. This means he has also crossed political newcomer Vivek Ramaswamy off his list.

“It’s definitely one of the three governors. I have a couple of conversations with all of them actually over the next week,” Sununu said. “And we’ll make kind of a firm decision in short order.”

The popular New Hampshire governor said the state’s primary next month is an important part of breaking the “assumption that Donald Trump is somehow just the presumptive nominee” and assured the other candidates that they can still catch up to the former president’s lead in the state. Trump is currently polling in the 40s in New Hampshire. Haley is polling second, at just under 19% as of Tuesday, according to FiveThirtyEight.

“Most people really won’t even decide who they’re voting for until … the next couple of weeks or maybe even after Christmas, given that this entire campaign has moved so late,” Sununu said. “I think all three governors — Chris, Ron, Nikki — they would all make excellent presidents. There’s no question about it. And it’s not just about finding the candidate who can win. It’s the candidate who’s really the best suited to lead this nation, to lead the free world.”

The Republican National Committee announced on Monday that all three and Ramaswamy have qualified for the fourth Republican presidential debate, which will take place in Alabama on Wednesday. The debate will air on NewsNation from 8-10 p.m. or can be streamed online via Rumble.

New Hampshire’s primary will be the first primary of the 2024 election cycle on Jan. 23, 2024, but comes after the Iowa caucus on Jan. 15, 2024.
