Residents in the District of Columbia who receive payments from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will stop receiving benefits for December in four days.

SNAP benefits are delivered to D.C. recipients on a rolling basis, with the exact dates depending on when a household becomes eligible and the first letter of a recipient’s last name. The district sends out food stamps beginning on Dec. 1 and goes until Dec. 10.

SOCIAL SECURITY UPDATE: FIRST ROUND OF DIRECT PAYMENTS WORTH UP TO $4,555 ARRIVES IN SEVEN DAYS

Those with last names starting with A-M should have received their SNAP benefits by Wednesday. Those with N, O, P, and Q last names will receive payments on Dec. 7; R and S last names will receive payments on Dec. 8; T, U, and V last names will receive payments on Dec. 9; and W, X, Y, and Z last names will receive payments on Dec. 10.

A household of one can receive a maximum of $291, a household of five can receive a maximum of $1,155, and a household of eight can receive a maximum of $1,751. A household can receive a maximum of $219 for each additional person after eight. These amounts are based on the recent cost-of-living adjustments for 2023-24.

Benefits are reloaded onto electronic benefit transfer cards each month. Recipients of food stamps are expected to spend about 30% of their resources on food.

Food stamps can be used at most stores that sell grocery items. District SNAP recipients can use the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s SNAP retail locator to find a store that accepts food stamps near them. Food stamps can also be used for eligible food items online and can be delivered from Amazon, Aldi via Instacart, Giant, and Safeway.

Approximately 145,800 people, or 22% of the district’s population, receive SNAP benefits — the highest percentage among the 50 states and territories. The average payment per household member per month is $188.
