Biden says he isn’t the only Democrat who can beat Trump, ‘but I will’

President Joe Biden suggested to reporters on Wednesday that there are other Democrats who could beat former President Donald Trump in the 2024 election but still vowed to do so himself.
Biden, following remarks at the White House pressuring Republicans to approve his supplemental funding request for additional Ukraine aid, was asked if he believes another candidate could have success in the general election.

“Probably 50 of them,” Biden joked. “I’m not the only one who could defeat him, but I will defeat him.”
The president’s comments come just one day after telling Democratic donors that he was only running to ensure Trump, the runaway favorite in the Republican primary, loses the general.
“American democracy, I give you my word as a Biden, is at stake,” Biden told attendees at his first closed-door fundraiser in Boston, Massachusetts. “He didn’t even show up at my inauguration. I can’t say I was disappointed, but he didn’t even show up.”
“We’ve got to get it done, not because of me,” he added at a second event. “If Trump wasn’t running, I’m not sure I’d be running. We cannot let him win.”
However, the president appeared to distance himself slightly upon his return to the White House.

“I expect so,” Biden responded when asked if he would be running if Trump wasn’t. “But look, he is running, and I have to run.”
