Officers are evacuating buildings one at a time, according to a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, from UNLV.
Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas initiated a ground stop on Wednesday due to the proximity of the airport runways to the shooting site and because of the police response to the shooting, which included helicopters, an official briefed on the incident told ABC News.
City police said earlier that they were responding to “preliminary reports” of an active shooter on the university campus near Beam Hall. A campus alert said university police were responding to a “confirmed active shooter” in Beam Hall at 11:54 a.m. PT. At 12:26 p.m., university officials said police were responding to additional reports that shots were fired in the student union, which is near Beam Hall.
People were asked to avoid the area, as there was police activity from Maryland Parkway at University Ave to Tropicana Ave. Videos captured by KSNV 3 News Las Vegas showed police officers on top of buildings.
Las Vegas police said in a post to X that officers had the suspect contained and there continued to be an active investigation at 12:31 p.m. local time. A follow-up post at 12:37 p.m. said that the suspect “has been located and is deceased.”
A KSNV News 3 Las Vegas reporter said on X that he was locked down at the university campus.
I’m currently locked down inside a UNLV campus building. Everyone nearby was told to lock down inside here. Police update just pushed out a “confirmed active shooter” alert https://t.co/hyFv1XCNws
