DeSantis hits Haley’s United Nations experience with new campaign merchandise

December 08, 2023 05:03 PM

EXCLUSIVE — Gov. Ron DeSantis’s (R-FL) presidential campaign launched new merchandise Friday, taking a shot at former United States Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley’s often-touted foreign policy credentials as the two fight to overtake each other with the hope of being the sole alternative to former President Donald Trump in the 2024 Republican primary race.

The DeSantis campaign began selling shirts and hats with the phrase “Defund the UN,” specifically hitting at Haley’s past experience as ambassador.

“The United Nations is a total farce, and a den of bad actors that hate America,” reads the Florida governor’s campaign website. “Why are we still funding them? Get your exclusive defund the UN merch today,”

Haley’s campaign did not provide comment to the Washington Examiner.

This is not the first time DeSantis or his campaign has made such a suggestion, which seems to directly undercut the significance of Haley’s experience as she runs for the Republican nomination.

“We need to defund the United Nations,” DeSantis said at a campaign event in New Hampshire last month. “No, seriously, I mean, this organization is corrupt as hell.”

DeSantis specifically pointed to the U.N.’s hesitance to condemn the Hamas terrorist attacks on Israel and the appointment of Iran’s envoy to chair a U.N. Human Rights Council social forum last month, which drew widespread condemnation.

“I mean, this is just a bunch of scoundrels,” DeSantis said. “So I would defund it. I don’t think it serves a useful purpose. I think it’s a negative in terms of its nonsense that it does.”

The move comes after Haley faced the brunt of the attacks at the fourth Republican debate Wednesday, which focused on her recent donor attention, her stance on transgender surgeries for children, and her foreign policy views.
