After the United States vetoed a United Nations resolution demanding a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) slammed President Joe Biden’s administration for backing the “indiscriminate bombing of Gaza.”

Last week, the U.S. was the sole U.N. Security Council vote against a resolution brought by the United Arab Emirates which would demand an immediate ceasefire and hostage release in the war in Gaza. It also further demanded ensured humanitarian access to Gaza.

“Shameful,” wrote Ocasio-Cortez on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

“The Biden Admin can no longer reconcile their professed concern for Palestinians and human rights while also single-handedly vetoing the UN’s call for ceasefire and sidestepping the entire US Congress to unconditionally back the indiscriminate bombing of Gaza,” she continued.

Shameful.

The U.S. was the only vote against the resolution in the body, with the United Kingdom abstaining. It had the support of 13 Council members.

In an explanation of the vote, U.S. Deputy Ambassador Robert Wood called the drafting of the resolution a “rushed process” with a “lack of appropriate consultation” by the authors. According to Wood, “nearly all of our recommendations were ignored.”

This ultimately resulted in “an imbalanced resolution that was divorced from reality, that would not move the needle forward, on the ground, in any concrete way. And so, we regretfully could not support it.”

The White House and Biden have expressed support for humanitarian pauses in the war between the terrorist group Hamas and Israel, but have shied away from backing a ceasefire, standing by Israel, a top U.S. ally. However, the Biden administration has reiterated that it continues to urge Israel to take all precautions to avoid civilian casualties in Gaza.

According to the Working Families Party’s ceasefire tracker, 61 members of Congress have called for such a halt to the war, including Ocasio-Cortez and other squad members, Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), and Ayanna Pressley (D-MA).
