Suspected Highland Park shooter trial scheduled for February

Suspected Highland Park shooter Robert Crimo III will go to trial for dozens of murder charges early next year for the July 4, 2022, mass shooting in the Chicago suburb.

The trial date was set for Feb. 26, 2024, during a hearing Monday in the Lake County Courthouse. Crimo exercised his right to a speedy trial in setting the trial date, according to ABC 7 Chicago.

The suspected shooter has elected to defend himself after pleading not guilty to all 117 counts he has been charged with for the mass shooting last year. The various charges include 21 counts of first-degree murder, 48 counts of attempted murder, and 48 counts of aggravated assault.

The case is expected to take four to six weeks, with Crimo’s next court appearance set for Jan. 10, 2024, according to NBC 5 Chicago.

The shooting on Independence Day 2022 in Highland Park, Illinois, killed seven people and injured dozens more. The victims of the shooting included Katherine Goldstein, 64; Kevin McCarthy, 37; Irina McCarthy, 35; Jacki Sundheim, 63; Stephen Straus, 88; Nicolas Toledo-Zaragoza, 78; and Eduardo Uvaldo, 69.

Crimo’s father, Robert Crimo Jr., was sentenced to 60 days in prison for misdemeanor reckless conduct charges. He began his sentence last month.
