Biden says Netanyahu must ‘change’ amid growing US dissent with Israel war

President Joe Biden said Tuesday that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu must “change” as dissent around the world continues to grow in response to Israel’s actions following the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas.

Biden, speaking to Democratic donors at a fundraiser in Washington, D.C., said the United States would continue to provide Israel support in its efforts to root out Hamas from Gaza but that he warned Netanyahu about waning public support for Israel’s bombing campaigns among voters.

“Bibi’s got a tough decision to make,” Biden told the group Tuesday. “This is the most conservative government in Israel’s history.”

The president added that Israel is losing support in the U.S. and other countries as civilian casualties mount in Gaza.

“I think he has to change, and with this government, this government in Israel is making it very difficult for him to move,” he continued.

Biden’s remarks Tuesday mark his greatest departure from supporting Netanyahu’s military campaign as Democratic voters and lawmakers pressure him to end the fighting in Gaza.

Biden and top officials, including National Security Council spokesman John Kirby and White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, have all reiterated calls for a two-state solution after the fighting ends.

Still, sweeping, pro-ceasefire protests have sprung up in cities across America. One incident in mid-November saw police actively confront roughly 150 protesters outside of the Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington. Those protesters claimed they wanted to press DNC staffers and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), who was inside the building, to turn up the heat on Biden regarding a protracted ceasefire.

Meanwhile, some of Biden’s top legislative allies, including those from his home state of Delaware, have become more vocal in recent days about monitoring future support for Israel’s military.
