‘Squad’ Democrat Ilhan Omar reveals she delivered personal warning to Biden

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) said she warned President Joe Biden that the Muslim vote was very important to his successful 2020 election and that he should listen to their concerns over the Israel-Hamas war ahead of the 2024 election.

Omar, a member of the House Democratic progressive group known as the “Squad,” said in an interview with Minneapolis CBS station WCCO on Sunday that she told the president he needs to reevaluate how he supports Israel in the conflict, invoking “images of young children’s bodies.”

“I recently had a conversation with the president. Muslims were very pivotal to his election,” Omar said. “They mobilized in all of the key states. Young people were very instrumental in him getting elected. And what I reminded him was that he needs to listen to these voices. People are heartbroken.”

“It’s been really hard to have conversations about politics and policy,” she added. “People just want the images of young children’s bodies that are piling up to end, and they want our support for this to end.”

The Minnesota Democrat’s plea with Biden comes as some Muslim groups in key swing states are considering campaigning against Biden because of his support of Israel. A campaign titled “#AbandonBiden” is seeking to oppose the president for reelection in Michigan, Minnesota, Arizona, Wisconsin, Florida, Georgia, Nevada, and Pennsylvania over the matter.

The president received 69% of the Muslim vote in 2020, compared to former President Donald Trump’s 17%, according to an exit poll conducted by the Council on American-Islamic Relations at the time.

Biden has received significant criticism from other members of the “Squad,” especially from Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI). Tlaib has accused Biden of “cheering on” Israel’s “ethnic cleansing,” among her other attacks against Biden over his stance on the war.
