Comer restores Oversight Committee’s aggressiveness after Democratic doldrums

December 19, 2023 02:59 PM

If it seems like House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) is always gaveling a committee to attention or on TV talking about the latest investigation of COVID or the Bidens, well, it’s because he is.

After two years of a dormancy so dark that an independent watchdog gave the committee and former Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney an “F,” Comer’s committee is on pace to restore the panel to its traditionally active investigative pattern.

For example, while the former congresswoman led the panel to 92 total hearings over two years during the 117th Congress, Comer has already held 82.

The Lugar Center, which gave Maloney the “F,” said the average for a two-year Congress is 125 hearings. Under Comer, the panel is on pace to receive an easy “A” from the watchdog.

“Our Republican majority has restored the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability to its core duties: rooting out waste, fraud, and abuse in the federal government and holding the Biden administration accountable,” Comer said.

Comer recently has been the lead GOP spokesman on the investigations into first son Hunter Biden’s financial dealings tied to his father, President Joe Biden. He has been the one explaining to a doubting media that there is overwhelming evidence to build an impeachment on.

His committee has also investigated the Biden border chaos, another potential avenue for impeachment, and the COVID crisis.

“The Oversight Committee has ongoing investigations into the Biden family’s corrupt influence peddling, President Biden’s border crisis, the Biden administration’s war on American energy, returning federal workers back to the office, gaps in America’s cyber readiness, COVID origins, and much more,” Comer said.

“This is a stark contrast to how the committee operated under Democrat control. Democrats refused to hold the Biden administration accountable — leading a nonpartisan group to give Democrats an ‘F’ in oversight,” he added.

A year-end after-action report put together by his committee and shared with Secrets shows:

  • 82 investigative hearings, 19 by the full committee.
  • Over 350 investigative letters.
  • A list of 69 hearing witnesses.
  • 22 bills passed.
  • One bill signed into law that blocked a Washington, D.C. law considered “soft on crime.”

“The American people can expect us to keep fighting for them in Washington as we move into 2024. We will remain steadfast in our mission to hold government and the Biden administration accountable, deliver answers and transparency to the American people, and build on the success and momentum of this past year,” Comer said.
