NRCC launches ‘Naughty List’ targeting vulnerable House Democrats

EXCLUSIVE — The National Republican Congressional Committee is debuting its “Democrat Naughty List,” targeting 11 vulnerable incumbents the group says had a string of “bad actions” over the last year.

The group launched a new website called “Dems On The Naughty List” on Tuesday, listing 11 House Democrats over their voting record as well as personal statements they’ve made over the last year. The website is accompanied by a video narrated by Santa explaining each of the lawmakers’ naughty actions.

“’Twas the night before Christmas in Democrats’ House, not a House Dem was stirring, not even a mouse,” the narrator says in the video.

The website outlines a number of alleged wrongdoings from the House Democrats, targeting lawmakers such as Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA) over reports that the Washington Democrat neglected to pay property taxes on an auto repair shop she owned in Portland, Oregon. Perez later paid off the taxes, noting she had given up ownership of the shop shortly after being elected.

The list also hits Reps. Mary Peltola (D-AK) and Mike Levin (D-CA) over their voting records, specifically hitting the Alaska Democrat for voting against the House GOP-led defense appropriations bill that included a pay raise for military members. The ad also criticizes Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-OH) over reports she violated the STOCK Act, which the Ohio Democrat helped author.

“[Santa] spoke just one word as he went straight to work and filled all the stockings with coal — then mumbled, ‘Jerk,’” the ad concludes. “He sprang to his sleigh, to his team, gave a whistle, and away they all flew like the down of a thistle, but I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight, ‘House Democrats are naughty, and they ruined my night.’”

All 11 of the Democrats on the naughty list are on the NRCC’s target list of offensive pickup opportunities in 2024.

House Democrats brushed off the campaign, with the party’s main campaign fundraising arm releasing its own ad accusing House Republicans of being “wildly unproductive and unfit to govern.” The DCCC video features a compilation of House Republicans lamenting the lack of progress from their own party, which House Democrats have decried as an “ineptitude” to lead the lower chamber.

“So the difference between these dueling videos is that the NRCC needed to hire an actor to read their holiday fiction aloud,” DCCC spokesman Viet Shelton told the Washington Examiner. “We just used clips of actual House Republicans bashing themselves and their dumpster fire of a 2023. It’s a difference we’re confident voters will be able to notice too.”

All 435 seats are up for grabs in 2024 as Republicans seek to hold their slim majority in the lower chamber. Of these, 45 are considered competitive, with most of those held by Democrats, giving the GOP a slight advantage as it prepares for the next election cycle.

However, of the 45 competitive seats, 17 are held by Republicans in districts that voted for President Joe Biden in 2020, compared to just five Democrats who must defend their seats in districts carried by former President Donald Trump. That means there are just enough vulnerable GOP-held seats to keep things competitive heading into the next election cycle.
