Vice President Kamala Harris directly compared former President Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler in an interview that aired Tuesday.

In a conversation with MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell, Harris responded to Trump’s recent remarks that illegal immigrants were “poisoning the blood of the country” by drawing parallels with the infamous German dictator.

“It is language that is meant to divide us,” Harris said. “It is language that I think people have rightly found similar to the language of Hitler.”

“And I think it’s just critically important that we remind each other, including our children, that the true measure of the strength of a leader is based not on who they beat down but who they lift up,” she continued.

“Sadly, I think there is something perverse that has happened in our country over the last many years, which is to suggest that strength looks like a bully when in fact the real character of a leader is someone who has empathy, who has some level of concern and care for the suffering of other people and does something to alleviate that suffering,” she said.

Harris also talked about the war in Gaza, attempting to tread the line between support for Israel and showing concern for Palestinian civilians.

While she started by mentioning the Oct. 7 massacre and saying, “Israel has a right to defend itself, without any question,” she also argued, “Far too many innocent Palestinians have been killed.”

When asked if she believed that Israel has gone too far given the number of civilian casualties and if she would support a ceasefire in Gaza, Harris seemed to try to toe the line between the two.

“It is important, then — and we have made clear our perspective on this — that there be lessening of the intensity and more precision around how Israel goes after Hamas and leadership of Hamas,” she added.

She then urged a two-state solution, saying the United States is working “toward equal measures of security, prosperity, and freedom for Israelis and Palestinians.”
