Independent presidential candidate Robert Kennedy Jr. said the United States will become ungovernable if former President Donald Trump is not allowed on the ballot in 2024.

Kennedy gave that warning shortly after the Colorado Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that Trump is disqualified from running for president under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, removing him from the state’s primary ballot. Kennedy described the decision as one “every American should be troubled by.”

“If Trump is kept out of office through judicial fiat rather than being defeated in a fair election, his supporters will never accept the result,” Kennedy wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “This country will become ungovernable. It’s time to trust the voters. It is up to the people to decide who the best candidate is. Not the courts. The people. That’s Democracy 101.”

Kennedy also said he hopes the Colorado Supreme Court will reverse its decision, adding that the court decision adds to “the perception that the elites are picking the President by manipulating the legal system.”

His opposition to the recent decision by the Colorado Supreme Court comes as he is gaining ground among voters in the 2024 election, posing a challenge to both the Republican and Democratic presidential nominees. A recent poll showed 1 in 5 voters would be open to the possibility of voting for Kennedy in 2024, while 1 in 4 registered voters were enthusiastic about a possible rematch between President Joe Biden and Trump.

The independent is not the only presidential candidate to voice disapproval of the court’s decision, with Republican Vivek Ramaswamy calling it “an *actual* attack on democracy.” He has pledged to withdraw from the Colorado primary ballot if Trump’s name is not on it as well, and he asked his fellow Republican candidates to do the same.

Other Republican candidates, including former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, have not joined Ramaswamy’s pledge to withdraw, though they have condemned the Colorado court’s decision.

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), told Newsmax he has no intention of removing his name from the ballot in Colorado.

“I think the case will get overturned by the Supreme Court, but I qualified for all the ballots, I’m competing in all the states, and I am going to accumulate the delegates necessary,” DeSantis said. “That’s the whole name of the game in this situation.”
