Almost 40 years after Wham! released “Last Christmas,” it has finally become the No. 1 song on the United Kingdom‘s Top 40 music list.

The classic holiday break-up song was performed by the late George Michael, who died on Christmas Day in 2016. In 1984, the song was ranked sixth and only ever peaked at No. 2 previously. Michael’s “Careless Whisper,” released that same year, beat out the Christmas tune.

“George would be beside himself [that] after all of these years, [we’ve] finally obtained Christmas No 1. Yog [George] said that he wrote Last Christmas with the intention of writing a Christmas No 1. It’s mission accomplished!” fellow Wham! member Andrew Ridgeley told the Guardian.

Brenda Lee became the oldest singer to have a song reach the top of the Billboard Hot 100 with the iconic “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.” The song was originally released in 1958 when Lee was only 13. It was Lee’s third song in total to top the chart.
