Psaki bashes ‘spinelessness’ of GOP candidates for defending Trump post-Colorado ruling

Former White House press secretary Jen Psaki lambasted 2024 GOP presidential candidates after they collectively denounced the Colorado Supreme Court’s ruling barring Republican front-runner Donald Trump from the ballot.

The controversial case is the first successful lawsuit from left-wing legal groups attempting to disqualify Trump from state primary ballots, arguing that the actions of the former president on Jan. 6, 2021, prohibit his candidacy under the 14th Amendment.

“While we may not yet know how the courts will ultimately rule in this case… we do know that Trump’s opponents somehow don’t see his legal troubles as a liability, in large part because the Republican electorate doesn’t either,” Psaki said on her MSNBC show Saturday.

Republican outsider Vivek Ramaswamy was among the first Republican primary challengers to condemn the decision, vowing to withdraw from the Centennial State’s primary if the decision was not reversed.

Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley called the Colorado decision “unthinkable,” and Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) said it was a political “stunt.” Even former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who has proudly highlighted his campaign as contrary to Trump, said it is “bad for the country” if Trump is kept off the ballot.

Psaki slammed the entire field for their support of Trump, saying it is “part of a pattern” and illustrated their “spinelessness.”

Republicans are not the only ones to support the former president, however.

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) has squashed the efforts of his fellow partisans in the Golden State to thwart Trump’s electoral plans.

“There is no doubt that Donald Trump is a threat to our liberties and even to our democracy,” Newsom said in a statement Friday afternoon, “but in California, we defeat candidates at the polls. Everything else is a political distraction.”

The long-shot Democratic challenger to President Joe Biden, Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN), also has condemned the decision.
