Potential Trump Cabinet members must be ready for ‘abuse of government power’: Bill Barr

Former Attorney General Bill Barr warned that those seeking his former position in a second Trump administration would “have to be ready to oppose abuse of government power.”

Barr made the comment Saturday on Fox News during an interview in which host Neil Cavuto pressed him about a hypothetical rematch between Joe Biden and Donald Trump and the latter’s ability to fill the Cabinet if he wins.

The twice-decorated former attorney general declined to offer support for the president despite his departure from the Trump administration on bad terms. He noted that other Republican candidates are polling better against Biden than his former boss, expressing more faith that one of them would do more to “move the country forward.”

“I’m worried that (Trump’s) style of governance, his continuing to pander to anger and frustration versus a constructive approach to solving our problems, is going to be chaotic and not accomplish very much,” Barr said. “He’ll be a lame-duck president.”

Barr said that if the former president is elected again in 2024, he will need people around him to “help keep him on the straight and narrow,” something he said officials in his first administration could do by pointing out bad ideas that would hurt his chances of being reelected.

“Once he wins a second term, I don’t know what considerations can be used to push back against bad ideas,” Barr said.

Cavuto asked Barr to give a hypothetical Trump attorney general pick advice on working for the former president, to which he replied that the person must be able to stand up to the chief executive.

“He has to be ready to say no and to resign,” Barr said. “Trump has made it plain that he’s going to respond to what he considers the left wing’s no-holds-barred approach by fighting fire with fire.”
