Netflix gave subscribers a Christmas present on Monday by releasing a teaser for Dave Chappelle’s latest comedy special, The Dreamer.

The trailer for the special features the narration of Morgan Freeman, who asks viewers what they dream about. Freeman says people should be inspired by their dream, with the trailer then cutting to him and Chappelle watching footage of the comedian on a TV set.

“What happens to a dream deferred?” Freeman asks. “Lucky for Dave, he doesn’t know.”

The Dreamer, scheduled to be released on New Year’s Eve, is Chappelle’s seventh comedy special for Netflix and his first since The Closer, which was released on Oct. 5, 2021. The special received some criticism for being homophobic and transphobic but was nominated for two Emmy awards.

Chappelle has made a reputation for himself for being a comedian who is not politically correct, with a venue in Minneapolis canceling a show he was scheduled to host in July 2022 due to backlash against him. Chappelle later slammed the protesters, stating they threw eggs at people “who were lined up to see the show,” and called the protesters people who “want to be feared.”

“I guess apparently they had made a pledge to the public at large that they would make their club a safe space for all people, and that they would ban anything they deemed transphobic,” Chappelle said about the venue, First Avenue. “This is a wild stance for an artistic venue to take, especially one that’s historically a punk rock venue.”

Last month, Chappelle went to the United States Capitol in a surprise visit, with various lawmakers, including Reps. Byron Donalds (R-FL), Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL), and Lauren Boebert (R-CO), who took selfies with the comedian. A representative for Chappelle told the Washington Examiner that he was not in the Capitol on official business — he was simply there to say hello to congressional staffers and lawmakers.
