NYPD outlines New Year’s Eve security plan amid protests

The New York Police Department outlined its plan to keep thousands of partygoers safe during the city’s annual New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square, which will take place Sunday, even as protests continue in the city.

Department officials said Friday that NYPD would establish a perimeter from Sixth Avenue to Eighth Avenue and from 41st Street to 57th Street, with checkpoints where officers will make sure no attendee is attempting to bring in prohibited items including alcohol, weapons, and large bags.

FBI agents with the New York office will be monitoring cameras for any potential dangers, and the NYPD will be monitoring the celebration through drones above the city, department officials said. Although there has been an increase in tips to law enforcement about potential threats, FBI officials said no credible threat has been made.

Officials said NYPD is also preparing for any pro-Palestinian protests that could take place on New Year’s Eve. The city has experienced 450 protests since the start of the Israel-Hamas war and averages approximately five per day.

“There’s a protest every day in New York City, so there’s certainly going to be a protest on New Year’s Eve,” NYPD Intelligence Division Commanding Officer John Hart told reporters. “We’re prepared for them at any number. We’re prepared for different groups from different places, and we will make sure this event stays safe and peaceful.”

Mayor Eric Adams also addressed security concerns on Friday and said NYPD reviewed security footage related to a machete attack on law enforcement last year to prepare for this year’s celebration. Adams also warned protesters not to be disruptive to partygoers.

“Those who want to peacefully protest, they have the right to do so,” Adams said. “But you’re not going to do it at the expense of disrupting those who are coming here to peacefully bring in the new year.”
