Elon Musk says Green Day now ‘raging for’ the machine amid altered ‘American Idiot’ lyrics

Billionaire Elon Musk took a swing against the band Green Day on New Year’s Day, claiming the band is now “milquetoastedly raging” for the “machine” after previously going against it.

Musk’s statement comes after the band performed on New Year’s Eve, during which Billie Joe Armstrong, Green Day’s lead singer, sang an altered verse of the band’s hit song “American Idiot” — replacing the verse “I’m not a part of a redneck agenda” with “I’m not a part of a MAGA agenda.” The altered lyric was a reference to former President Donald Trump and his “Make America Great Again” slogan.

“Green Day goes from raging against the machine to milquetoastedly raging for it,” Musk wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Green Day has not shied away from expressing its disdain for the former president in the past, and the band spoke out against Trump during a concert performance in 2016 before he won the election. The band has also sold limited-time anti-Trump merchandise.

The song that Green Day altered was released in 2004 as an attempt to criticize then-President George W. Bush and the Iraq War.

Though Musk joked about Green Day’s knock against Trump, the billionaire has said he is not a fan of the former president himself, saying in 2022 that he would prefer a “less divisive” candidate to run for president in 2024. Last year, he appeared with Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) during a Twitter Spaces event in which DeSantis announced his foray into the Republican Party’s 2024 presidential primary race.

Besides Trump and DeSantis, other Republican candidates still running in the party’s primary race include former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. Trump is still leading the primary race despite various legal setbacks.
