A Black Lives Matter group in Indiana disrupted the inauguration of South Bend’s mayor, protesting the successor and hometown of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

Protesters with Black Lives Matter South Bend decried Democratic Mayor James Mueller on Monday for his weak leadership and greater problems in the city, according to a report.

“Mueller has failed us,” one sign read. “Release the opportunity fund.”

Leaders of the protest also argued that primarily black neighborhoods in the city have not received the economic and social support they desperately need, the report noted.

“We are here today to let the mayor of South Bend know that he has a failed record here. He has let us all down in the black community … and we won’t stand for it,” one protester said.

Mueller, who served under then-Mayor Buttigieg as chief of staff, maintains that his city is dedicated to fostering inclusion.

“The city of South Bend is committed to being an inclusive city and making sure that when we do go out to bid on projects, that we’re doing our best to be inclusive of the contractors out there,” he said.

Despite Mueller’s promises and the presence of six black members on the city council, organizers of Monday’s protest are calling for “real” representation, according to the report.

“We want the reinstitution of the business suite,” Joseph Shabazz of the NAACP and BLM South Bend said.

“We want them to make that so-called black Chamber of Commerce do their job. A lot of people don’t even know we’ve got one.”
