Hollywood actor and filmmaker Shia LaBeouf received the sacrament of confirmation on Sunday and was welcomed into the Catholic Church.

LaBeouf, 37, whose journey to Catholicism was catalyzed by working on Abel Ferrara’s film Padre Pio, was confirmed by Bishop Robert Barron of Winona-Rochester, Minnesota, according to a report.

“We are thrilled to share that our dear friend Shia LaBeouf has fully entered the Church this past weekend through the sacrament of confirmation!” the Capuchin Franciscans Western America Province wrote in a statement on Facebook.

“The Capuchin Franciscan friars are overjoyed to welcome him into the fold and witness his deep commitment to his faith journey.”

With his new commitment to the Catholic Church, LaBeouf wants to become a deacon, according to the actor’s confirmation sponsor, Brother Alexander Rodriguez.

Deacons are members of the clergy who may proclaim the gospel, deliver a homily, and assist at the altar during Mass.

“Shia LaBeouf, known for his incredible talent and passion in the entertainment industry, has embarked on a profound spiritual journey that has led him to embrace the teachings of the Catholic Church,” the Facebook post read.

“His decision to fully enter the Church is a testament to his sincere desire to grow in his relationship with God and live out the Gospel values.”

LaBeouf comes from a mixed-faith background, and he received both a bar mitzvah and Christian baptism, but his commitment to the Catholic Church began amid difficulties in his personal life, including alcoholism and a lawsuit filed by an ex-girlfriend.

The filmmaker has been candid and open about both.

Playing Padre Pio in Ferrara’s film opened his eyes to the church, and fellow filmmaker Mel Gibson welcomed LaBeouf to Latin Mass, the 37-year-old actor said.

“[Gibson] was cautious with me. Many years ago, I went to his house and told him to his face that his religious views and politics were a hindrance to his craft. He giggled with grace and told me to read about the Maccabees,” LaBeouf said, according to the report.

“As I fell forward, he always remained supportive.”

The Capuchin Franciscans lauded LaBeouf’s confirmation as a transformative process.

“We invite you to join us in celebrating this momentous occasion and to keep Shia LaBeouf in your prayers as he continues to deepen his faith and seek God’s guidance in his life. May his example inspire others to explore their own spiritual paths and find solace in the loving embrace of the Church.”
