Biden puts White House lawyers on edge with private tours for big donors

The White House Counsel office advised President Joe Biden to cease giving donors tours of the Oval Office.

Biden has held around a half-dozen meetings with big donors, in groups ranging from four to eight people at a time, at the White House to reassure them about his 2024 reelection campaign since its launch in April 2023. The meetings were arranged by Jeffrey Katzenberg, co-chairman of the reelection campaign, the Washington Post reported.

While every modern president has hosted supporters at the White House in similar ways, the White House Counsel office advised that taking supporters through the Oval Office could raise some legal troubles. After the raising of the concern, Biden stopped the tours.

“President Biden and his team take all rules concerning the White House and reelections seriously, and we’re proud of that,” White House deputy press secretary Andrew Bates told Axios. “It is typical for any president, regardless of party, to host supporters at the White House complex, which is both a working office as well as a personal residence.”

The meetings included dinners and lunches, though some took place outside of meals.

Topics discussed in the meetings ranged from how to take on former President Donald Trump, to the economy, to the Israel-Hamas war, according to Axios.
