Here’s what you need to know about 2024 March for Life

The third Friday of January is less than a week away, and with it will bring the annual March for Life.

The event, which has been held once a year since 1974, will be the second one to be held since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022. The march, which begins near the Washington Monument and concludes outside the Supreme Court, will be prefaced with a rally near the monument, and there will be a gala dinner taking place in the evening.

Ahead of the annual march, here is everything you need to know about the biggest yearly event for the anti-abortion movement.

What is the March for Life?

The March for Life started on Jan. 22, 1974, the one-year anniversary of Roe v. Wade, and was held as a means to peacefully protest the Supreme Court’s decision. Since then, the march has always been held on the Friday closest to Jan. 22, which this year is Jan. 19.

The theme of this year’s march was unveiled in November 2023 and is titled “With Every Woman, For Every Child,” which is meant to draw attention to how the anti-abortion movement needs to deliver aid to both mothers and their children.

“We aren’t saying that it’s easy, but we are saying that it is right to choose life and we hold that choosing life is empowering and that love saves lives,” said Jeanne Mancini, president of the March for Life.

Who is speaking at the March for Life?

On Thursday, it was revealed that House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) will be among the speakers at the March for Life this year. Other speakers who have been announced to attend include Jim Daly, president and CEO of Focus on the Family, Benjamin Watson, a former NFL tight end, and Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ), among others.

When does the March for Life start this year?

The rally will begin at 12 p.m. EST, with the march expected to start sometime around 1 p.m. EST. In the evening, a rose dinner gala is expected to take place from 6 p.m. EST through 9 p.m. EST.

Why is the March for Life continuing after Roe v. Wade was overturned?

The March for Life organization states that even though Roe was overturned, part of its mission is to change the “hearts and minds” of people regarding abortion, and that the march’s goal is not just to change state and federal abortion laws, but to “change the culture to ultimately make abortion unthinkable.”
