Fani Willis accusations are ‘troubling’ but legal system will work, Kemp says

Gov. Brian Kemp (R-GA) is trusting the judicial system to work its course as reports about Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’s alleged relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade make the rounds.

Willis has been accused of having an undisclosed relationship with Wade, who is overseeing the racketeering case against former President Donald Trump for alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election in the Peach State. Kemp called the accusations “troubling” but said he believes the judge presiding over the case will “get to the bottom” of it while speaking with Bloomberg on Wednesday.

While bad policies from Joe Biden and Washington D.C. continue to hurt hardworking Americans, we’re highlighting a winning path here in the Peach State.

“But look, there’s some, you know — months ago, I was warning people there wasn’t evidence to go after Fani Willis, but now there’s some troubling things that have been accusations that have been made, and I think the judge will get to the bottom of that,” Kemp said. “That’s playing out right now.”

The Georgia governor also pointed out that the state legislature is working to enhance oversight of district attorneys, pointing to legislation passed last year that was struck down in the courts.

“We’ve got a legislation we passed for district attorney oversight that ended up in the courts and so we’re gonna have to re-legislate that this year, which we’re in the process of doing right now in our legislative session, but there’s ways to address that and we need to let the legal process play out.”

Kemp would not say if he would call for Willis to be removed from the case, adding that he has not seen the evidence of the allegations, but that he has confidence in the judge overseeing the case against Trump.

“I wouldn’t be able to speak to that because I haven’t seen the evidence. But I think at the very least if the accusations are true, it is very troubling, and I feel certain that the judge will rule in the right way to make sure that President Trump and anybody else have been treated fairly.”

Accusations surrounding the Trump case in Fulton County have swirled in recent weeks, with the alleged relationship between Willis and Wade being one of the most prominent. A lawyer for one of Trump’s co-defendants accused the district attorney of having hired her partner and used money he earned from his employment on the case to take vacations and other expensive endeavors with Willis.

Willis spoke out about the allegations on Sunday, saying she is not “perfect” and that she should be allowed grace.

“You cannot expect black women to be perfect and save the world,” Willis said. “We need to be allowed to stumble. We need grace.”

Investigators have also been alleged to have met with the dissolved House Jan. 6 committee and the White House in 2022 as it was gathering a case against the former president, according to reports. The nature of those meetings was not disclosed in the report.
