White House apologizes to Asa Hutchinson for DNC statement mocking his presidential campaign

The White House issued multiple apologies Wednesday to former Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R-AR) for a statement issued by the Democratic National Committee mocking the Tuesday suspension of his presidential campaign.

Hutchinson had struggled to build momentum in the Republican presidential primary and dropped out of the race after earning just 0.2% support at Monday’s Iowa caucuses. A DNC spokesperson reacted to his suspension with a statement reading, “this news comes as a shock to those of us who could’ve sworn he had already dropped out.”

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre responded to a question about the statement during Wednesday’s briefing by apologizing to Hutchinson on President Joe Biden’s behalf.

“I appreciate the question as to something that we definitely want to address. President Biden has deep respect for Gov. Hutchinson and admires the race that he ran. The president knows him to be a man of principle who cares about our country and has a strong record of public service,” Jean-Pierre stated before noting that White House chief of staff Jeff Zients additionally called Hutchinson directly to offer an apology.

Asked if there would be any repercussions for staffers responsible for producing the statement, Jean-Pierre deferred to the DNC.

“The DNC obviously is a Democratic political arm, so I don’t want to speak to that. You’d have to reach out to the DNC directly,” she continued. “What I can say is how the president felt. It did not represent his views. We apologize to the governor. … He respects the governor’s public service.”
