Green Day performs ‘American Idiot’ in NYC subway with anti-Trump lyrics

Green Day surprised subway riders in New York City as they filmed a performance for an upcoming episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Commuters captured the moment on a platform while waiting for a train. Fallon, along with the band members, entered the subway station in disguise and with security guards with them.

Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tre Cool performed acoustic versions of “Dookie” and “American Idiot” while Fallon shook a tambourine and occasionally sang along. The band replaced the 2004 lyrics of “American Idiot” from “I’m not a part of a redneck agenda” to “I’m not a part of a MAGA agenda,” just as they had during Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve.

According to the band, the song, with its new lyrics, will be played at every stop of its summer tour. The song peaked on the U.S. song chart at the 61st spot, according to Billboard’s Hot 100. Meanwhile, in the United Kingdom, it peaked at the third spot. The band will visit five different cities across the country.

Last year, Armstrong threatened to renounce his American citizenship following the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade.
