Newsom mocks DeSantis after he drops out of 2024 race

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) wasted little time before ridiculing Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) after the latter announced he was dropping out of the presidential race and endorsing GOP front-runner Donald Trump.

“Fire sale on all Ron DeSantis merch today!” Newsom posted on X in response to a journalist’s report on DeSantis’s decision.

The Florida governor announced his plans to drop out of the race in a video posted to X on Sunday, just days before the New Hampshire primary. “Nobody worked harder, and we left it all out on the field. Now, following our second-place finish in Iowa, we’ve prayed and deliberated on the way forward,” DeSantis said before endorsing Trump and condemning the only other challenger left in the GOP field: Nikki Haley.

Trump, for his part, said DeSantis was a “very capable person,” and the former president’s team said they were “honored” by the governor’s endorsement.

Newsom and DeSantis have publicly sparred for months, with perhaps the pinnacle of their exchanges occurring when they debated one another late last year. The governors’ disagreements have resulted in a proxy “red state vs. blue state” contest, with DeSantis ridiculing Newsom for policies deemed too progressive and Newsom using every DeSantis setback on the campaign trail to mock his Republican adversary.

Newsom was speculated by many, DeSantis included, to be running a shadow campaign for president, with his travels abroad, public spotlight, and championing of President Joe Biden’s policies. However, Newsom has not filed to run for president, perhaps waiting for 2028 instead.

The New Hampshire primary is on Tuesday, where Trump and Haley will face off in a contest that could either signal Haley’s ability to give Trump a run for his money or spell doom for her campaign.
