The Freedom Caucus is building up its state network to strengthen influence in Congress

The House Freedom Caucus is looking to build on its state network this election period in order to increase its future influence in Congress by encouraging its members to run for national office.

There are at least two state Freedom Caucus members already running for office in the 2024 election, including in a Republican primary against an incumbent in South Carolina.

“Having the state Freedom Caucuses builds synergy for communications and networking to create sound ideas and cohesive conservative policies on the state and federal level,” Rep. Eric Burlison (R-MO) told Punchbowl News.

The mission of the House Freedom Caucus has changed over the years, but the caucus has grown significantly. What started as nine members in 2015 has expanded to nearly three dozen lawmakers, who largely align themselves with former President Donald Trump and his America First doctrine.

The controversial reputation around the Freedom Caucus has also stretched to the state level, where some members were removed from the Republican caucus in South Carolina because they declined to sign a document that prevented them from campaigning against sitting GOP legislators.

Some candidates that the House caucus hopes to bring in from South Carolina are Adam Morgan, who is challenging Rep. William Timmons (R-SC) in the GOP primary, and state Rep. Stewart Jones, who is running for Rep. Jeff Duncan’s (R-SC) open seat.

Jones, who is one of the founding members of the South Carolina Freedom Caucus, appeared proud of the progress the caucus has made.

“We’ve just done an incredible job pushing the Republican Party further to the right and closer to the Constitution,” Jones said. “People don’t always like that message.”

The Freedom Caucus has state chapters in 11 states so far, including Arizona, Idaho, Illinois, Wyoming, South Dakota, Missouri, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Georgia, and Montana.
