DeSantis voices support for sending Florida State Guard to Texas

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) expressed he was “willing” to send the Florida State Guard to Texas amid an influx of illegal border crossings.

DeSantis made his support for a bill in the Florida House clear during a press conference Friday. HB 1551 would remove the requirement that the Florida State Guard be deployed exclusively within the state. Florida has previously sent its National Guard to states in need, like California and Texas, but hasn’t deployed them for the sake of immigration yet.

“We may do more National Guard, but we also would be willing to do the Florida State Guard, and the reason why you would want to do the State Guard is because the president would not be able to federalize the State Guard,” DeSantis said.

Former President Donald Trump suggested states send their National Guards to Texas amid calls from prominent Texas Democratic leaders for the Biden administration to federalize the Texas National Guard in order to prevent them from installing more barbed wire fencing at the Texas-Mexico border.

“I don’t know if it’s going to come to this, but just think about what does that say to the American people if you are federalizing the Texas National Guard in order to take barricades down from the border to let more people come in illegally?” DeSantis said.

Govs. Kevin Stitt (R-OK) and Kristi Noem (R-SD) similarly committed to sending their National Guardsmen to Texas if needed. They are among the 25 Republican governors who have supported Gov. Greg Abbott’s (R-TX) defensive actions at the border so far.
