McCaul: DHS Secretary Mayorkas ‘needs to pay for his sins’

A senior House Republican strongly rebuked Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas hours before the GOP’s impeachment proceedings against the Cabinet official begin and called for staunch retribution.

House Foreign Affairs Chairman Michael McCaul (R-TX) called for Mayorkas to “pay for his sins” for failing to stem the record-high flow of illegal immigrants who have attempted to enter the country illegally over the past three years.

“Nobody deserves it more than this man. I call him the architect of destruction and chaos. He has created this crisis. And he knows better; he’s smarter,” McCaul said during a press conference at the U.S. Capitol Monday evening.

“He knows what he’s done, and he needs to pay for his sins,” McCaul said.

McCaul joined a crowd of GOP lawmakers who issued brutal statements against Mayorkas and presented a united party front ahead of the House Homeland Security Committee’s markup of two articles of impeachment against Mayorkas on Tuesday.

McCaul said his children attended a funeral last month for a friend who died from fentanyl poisoning on Christmas morning.

“The family tried to wake him up. He was dead. This is the real human life tragedy of the Biden administration’s policies,” McCaul said. “We will begin our articles of impeachment tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. on the Homeland Security Committee, and we will prevail.”

House Republicans have a slim majority and are expected to have the votes to eventually impeach Mayorkas, but he is unlikely to be convicted in the Senate, which is controlled by Democrats.
